St. Kilian’s Deutsche Schule

St. Kilian’s is unique on the Irish educational landscape, a German/Irish school with a strong European focus. St. Kilian’s is co-educational, inter-denominational and spans the full educational cycle from Kindergarten to Leaving Certificate. St. Kilian’s is named after the Irish saint, Kilian, who was known for his love of study and who travelled to Würzburg, Germany as a missionary.

The school offers a diverse, inclusive yet challenging environment, enriched with a strong sense of Irish, German and European culture. It fosters independence of thought, a love of learning, personal responsibility, confidence and integrity, educating students to be confident, independent and competent citizens in Europe.St. Kilian’s logo and brand identity had become outdated and we were chosen to develop a new brand identity for the school.

The St. Kilian’s logo is made up of two components:  a graphic ‘K’ motif and the descriptor text. The St. Kilian’s ‘K’ motif is inspired by Josef Albers’ Kombination Schrift alphabet; a modular lettering system based upon ten basic shapes derived from a circle and a square. This efficient typographic design was typical of the early 20th century work derived from the Bauhaus school in Germany.

This German design-influenced motif, combined with the descriptor text set in ‘Brandon Grotesque’, a German sans serif typeface, ensures that the logo is contemporary and accessible, yet rooted in the traditions of German design. This logo reflects on the school’s forward-thinking and progressive approach to education in Ireland.

The three core elements that make up the ‘K’ may be reconfigured, creating dynamic compositions as part of the graphic language in St. Kilian’s communications.

It was of great importance to us that our branding agency really understood the history and ethos of St. Kilian’s Deutsche Schule. Red Dog’s approach was considered and thorough with a really strong attention to detail. Red Dog worked hard to ensure all stakeholders were on board throughout the process and made the process very enjoyable. Feedback on the new identity has been really positive across the board and the students in particular are delighted with it.
